Hello! My name is Steve Van Gorkom. I am a 42-year-old husband and father of 4. I spent most of my life in Chicago, and just like most people, I was taught at an early age that you go to school, and get good grades, you go to college, get a good job, and if you work hard enough, you can live the American Dream.
Well, I was a horrible student, so the "get good grades" ship had sailed. I tried to "go to college," but it was too expensive, so I was left with what I could control – WORK HARD, and man oh man, did I work hard, LIKE TOO HARD. I climbed to senior management in nearly every company I worked for, and when the dust settled, my sons were already 7 & 8, my daughters were 4 & 5. I had missed so much!
My wife and I are high school sweethearts, we've been together since I was 17. We got married, started a family, had nice cars, a huge house... the "American Dream." One night she looks at me and says, "So what's next?" I looked back, confused. She says, "We've done everything we set out to do, now it's time for you to come home and enjoy it with us." I laughed out loud, literally! I was stuck in the Matrix; there was no way I was leaving my job. I made 6 figures, we had just gotten ourselves to financial freedom – it was out of the question.
The next couple of weeks, I walked around work with those words rattling around in my head until I had an epiphany... SHE WAS RIGHT! I was trading the most important asset we have in life for money. I was missing out on memories that could last a lifetime. So, we sold our house (during the pandemic), packed up, and moved out to Florida. We started our own online reselling business and began building those memories. For the first time, I was present in all of their lives.
